Samburu National Reserve Complete Guide, Kenya
Samburu National Reserve covers an area of 165 Km² and it is located in Samburu, Rift Valley about 345Km from Nairobi. This reserve is an excellent option if you’ve been to Kenya before or are looking for more of an off-the-beaten-path destination that still has plenty of creature comforts.
The Reserve lies within ecological zone V- which is classified as arid and semi- arid with moisture index of 42 to 57, which indicate that evapo-transpiration is greater than available moisture. The days are extremely hot while the nights are cool. The annual mean temperatures range between 18ºC and 30ºC
The Ewaso Nyiro River which runs through the reserve is surrounded by a permanent bushes, doum palms and acacia which provide respite from the sweltering sun. This reserve is home to the rare northern special five species: Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx.
Where to stay in Samburu:
The reserve has some of the most spectacular accommodation in the region but we would prefer Samburu Elephant Lodge which is a privately owned 16-bed lodge, within the heart of the reserve. It is situated along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river, comprising of 4 single villas and 6 Family villas.
